Because meaningful representation requires understanding the whole person.

Our Mission

Leveling Justice Mitigation Services provides human-centered, trauma-informed mitigation advocacy that brings context, dignity, and equity to the legal process. We believe meaningful representation requires understanding the whole person—not just the charges they face.

Every Story Has Context

Every case file tells part of a story.

Police reports document an arrest. Medical records list diagnoses. School records reflect attendance, grades, and disciplinary history. Court records identify charges, convictions, and sentences.

Those records are essential, but they are only one part of the picture.

They rarely explain the childhood shaped by instability, the loss that changed the course of a person's life, the trauma that influenced development, or the relationships and circumstances that affected decision-making. They tell us what happened, but they often leave unanswered the equally important question of why.

Mitigation exists to bridge that gap.

By combining records, interviews, research, and careful analysis, mitigation provides the context necessary to understand the whole person—not simply the events that brought them into the legal system.

Our Approach

Human-Centered

We approach every case with the understanding that individuals are more than the worst moment of their lives.

Trauma-Informed

We recognize the impact of trauma, adversity, and systemic barriers and strive to conduct investigations in a respectful and compassionate manner.

Thorough

From records collection to witness interviews, we are committed to conducting comprehensive investigations that leave no stone unturned.

Collaborative

We work closely with attorneys, experts, clients, families, and community members to develop meaningful mitigation evidence.

Why We Started Leveling Justice

Leveling Justice Mitigation Services was founded because we believed there was a better way to approach mitigation.

After working in criminal defense, we saw how difficult it could be for attorneys to conduct comprehensive life history investigations while also managing the countless demands of litigation. We also recognized that meaningful mitigation should not be limited to capital cases. Every client has experiences, relationships, and circumstances that deserve to be understood, regardless of the type of case they face.

We created Leveling Justice to provide attorneys with dedicated mitigation support grounded in thorough investigation, thoughtful analysis, and genuine human connection.

Our goal has never been to simply collect records or conduct interviews. It is to uncover the experiences that help explain a person's life, identify factors that may otherwise remain hidden, and provide attorneys with reliable, well-documented information that strengthens advocacy at every stage of representation.

We approach every case with curiosity, humility, and the understanding that every person has something to teach us. We never assume we know someone's story—we investigate it.

We believe every person is more than the worst moment of their life.

We believe effective advocacy begins with understanding.

We believe records matter, but so do memories, relationships, and lived experiences.

We believe every client deserves to have their story investigated with dignity, accuracy, and compassion.

And we believe attorneys deserve a mitigation team they can trust to uncover the details that make meaningful advocacy possible.

At Leveling Justice Mitigation Services, our mission is simple: to help tell the full story.
